Arts Forum & Orientation

Join us at the UVSA Arts Forum, a chance for young artists and organizers to discuss the role of art within our communities, and to make recommendations on what we would like to see achieved!

Sunday, January 25, 2009 @ 1PM to 4PM
Bayview Room, University Union, CSU East Bay
25800 Carlos Bee Blvd, Hayward, CA

Rubber-band time will only hurt you, so please come by close to that time! Be sure to bring your favorite prop, and grab lunch before you arrive (fight the starving artist stereotype!).

In November 2008, UVSA appointed its first Arts Chair to oversee a new group, the Arts Commission. The task of this group is to network with artists and arts organizations to engage youths in programs that encourage the spirit of creativity through painting, choreography, film making, photography, composing, writing, designing, etc. We do this to support the mission of UVSA, which is to (1) Unite students from different colleges and high schools to build solidarity in Vietnamese youth culture locally, nationally, and internationally; (2) Represent the diverse and dynamic Vietnamese youth population by encouraging interaction, participation, and activism in the Vietnamese American and mainstream communities; (3) Promote public awareness of the Vietnamese culture, language, and history to encourage the growth of individuals and to bridge communities; and (4) Encourage the growth of leadership and teamwork with a commitment to community service.

Talents at the Table

Graphic Design, Writing, Choreography, Producer Work

Concerns

  • Declining Vietnamese arts organizations
    • Tet festival is losing steam; uses a lot of money to put up an event that doesn't excite the crowd
  • Economy is tough; funding is drying up everywhere
    • Sponsors no longer investing funds into creativity and innovation
    • Too much focus on quantity rather than quality
  • Loss of talent; number of VSAs in the region are dwindling, as are the number and size of Vietnamese culture shows being produced
    • A lot of shows focusing on performances and not enough on good storytelling

Suggested Strategies

  • Need to pool resources and cut down on waste and inefficiencies; reuse, reduce, recycle
    • Identify and partner up with costume and prop rental companies to warehouse Vietnamese props/costumes
  • Network with creative talent agencies and Vietnamese arts organizations to manage talented Vietnamese
    • Have VSAs start thinking about utilizing these agencies/organizations for their work
    • Work with Vietnamese culture experts in the region to teach interesting tidbits of Vietnamese culture to our youths
  • Encourage Vietnamese writers to submit work into an anthology. The culture show directors of succeeding years can draw upon the works from this anthology to inspire their playwright.
    • Consider themes of "Facing Adversity", especially considering tough economic times, people need a story they can relate to and help them overcome these difficult times.
    • Work with historians/publications officers of each VSA.
  • Re-establish relationship with sponsors: help them see that they are investing their donations into creative, innovative work that has staying value (e.g. even 400 years later, people are still doing Shakespeare plays).

Other Points

  • Difference between art and entertainment?
  • Shows for Vietnamese target audience vs general target audience
